Gardeners Wimbledon Health and Safety Policy
This Health and Safety Policy sets out how Gardeners Wimbledon manages and promotes safe working practices across all gardening and grounds maintenance services. Our aim is to protect our employees, clients, visitors, contractors and the wider public from harm while we carry out work in gardens, outdoor spaces and communal areas.
We are committed to complying with all applicable health and safety legislation and recognised industry best practice. Health and safety considerations are an integral part of our planning, decision making and day to day operations.
Management Responsibility and Commitment
The management of Gardeners Wimbledon accepts overall responsibility for health and safety performance. Managers will provide leadership, resources and support to ensure that risks arising from our gardening activities are identified, controlled and reviewed on a regular basis.
Management responsibilities include setting clear safety objectives, monitoring performance, and reviewing this policy periodically to ensure it remains effective, relevant and up to date. Any significant changes in legislation, guidance or our working methods will be reflected in revised procedures and communicated to our team.
Employee Responsibilities
Every member of staff has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Employees are required to follow all safety instructions, use equipment correctly, cooperate with supervisors and report hazards, accidents, near misses or concerns without delay.
Employees must never misuse or interfere with anything provided for their health, safety or welfare and must only carry out tasks for which they are trained and authorised. Where there is any uncertainty about safe methods of work, staff must seek guidance from a supervisor before proceeding.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
We undertake risk assessments for our gardening and maintenance activities, including but not limited to lawn care, hedge cutting, tree work within our competence, planting, clearance, use of power tools and handling of garden waste. Hazards are identified, risks are evaluated and proportionate control measures are implemented.
Safe systems of work are developed to guide tasks such as operating machinery, working at height, using ladders, applying approved garden products, and accessing client premises. These systems are communicated to employees and reviewed periodically, particularly following any incident or change in work equipment or processes.
Training, Instruction and Supervision
Gardeners Wimbledon provides suitable information, instruction and training to ensure employees understand the risks associated with gardening activities and know how to manage them. This includes induction training, role specific instruction on machinery and tools, and refresher training where necessary.
Less experienced staff are supervised by competent personnel until they can demonstrate that they can work safely and independently. Where specialised tasks are undertaken, such as the use of particular equipment or the handling of specific substances, only trained and authorised employees may carry out those activities.
Work Equipment and Machinery Safety
All tools, machinery and equipment used for gardening and grounds maintenance are selected, maintained and inspected to ensure they are safe and suitable for the intended tasks. Pre use checks are carried out by staff, and any defects are reported immediately so that faulty items can be removed from service until repaired or replaced.
Guards, safety devices and manufacturer instructions are followed at all times. Employees are trained in the safe operation of mowers, trimmers, blowers, chainsaws within our competence, and other powered tools. No unauthorised modification of equipment is permitted.
Personal Protective Equipment
Appropriate personal protective equipment is provided where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means. This may include safety boots, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, high visibility clothing, respiratory protection and weather appropriate clothing.
Employees are required to use personal protective equipment as instructed, keep it in good condition and report losses or damage promptly so that replacements can be arranged. Personal protective equipment is considered a last line of defence and does not replace the need for sensible planning and risk reduction.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Many gardening tasks involve lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling and repetitive movements. We assess manual handling risks and put measures in place to reduce the likelihood of injury. This includes using mechanical aids where reasonably practicable, breaking down loads into manageable sizes, planning routes and encouraging team lifting when needed.
Employees are trained in safe manual handling techniques and are encouraged to take regular breaks, vary tasks and report any signs of strain, discomfort or musculoskeletal problems at an early stage.
Chemicals, Substances and Environmental Considerations
Where we use gardening products such as fertilisers, soil conditioners or approved weed control substances, we follow the relevant safety data, regulations and guidance. Substances are stored, transported, mixed and applied in line with manufacturer instructions and statutory requirements.
We take steps to protect people, pets, wildlife, plants and watercourses from exposure to substances used in our work. Only trained personnel handle controlled products, and appropriate signage or verbal warnings are provided where required.
Working at Height and Access
Working at height is carefully planned and controlled. Ladders and access equipment are inspected, set up on stable ground and used only for suitable tasks and durations. Where work cannot be done safely using basic equipment, alternative methods or specialist contractors may be used.
Employees must not overreach, climb on unsuitable structures or carry out work at height in unsafe weather conditions, such as strong winds or heavy rain, where this increases risk.
Public, Client and Property Protection
We recognise our responsibility to protect clients, neighbours, passers by and visitors during our operations. Work areas are organised to minimise obstruction, noise and disturbance. Where necessary, barriers, cones or clear verbal communication are used to keep others away from hazardous zones.
Care is taken to protect property, including buildings, vehicles, outdoor fixtures and garden features. Before work starts, we consider access routes, parking, storage areas and potential risks to surfaces, glazing and boundaries.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported to management as soon as practicable. Incidents are investigated to identify root causes and to implement corrective actions that prevent a recurrence.
Employees are briefed on basic emergency procedures, including how to respond to injuries, fires, equipment failures and sudden changes in weather conditions that may affect safety. First aid arrangements are maintained and suitable equipment is provided within vehicles or on site.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
Gardeners Wimbledon monitors health and safety performance through inspections, feedback, incident statistics and ongoing consultation with staff. Where areas for improvement are identified, we implement changes and communicate them clearly to everyone affected.
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly to reflect developments in legislation, guidance, technology and our own working practices. Our objective is continual improvement and the promotion of a positive, proactive health and safety culture throughout the business.
